The Music in the Schools Foundation began in 1995 as the outreach project of the Palo Alto branch of the Music Teachers’ Association of California. Three contract teachers are currently in the classroom of over 1300 students at the Child Development Center pre-school, Costano School, Green Oaks Academy and Willow Oaks, pre-K through 5th grade. The students learn the basics of music and rhythm notation; they sing, dance and play music games. The older students are learning beginning instrument skills with recorders. During the 2007-08 academic year we will reach about 30% of the students in the district.

In 2006, we launched a pilot program, Music through Literacy, in the Ravenswood Child Development Center. Kitty Pecka, a pre-school music specialist at Stanford University’s Bing Nursery School, has trained a number of enthusiastic pre-school parents to work as volunteers. The Music through Literacy program introduces young children to the arts and involves parents in their school experience.
